Hi, I am a Stephens out here in Oregon. My father was Paul Lower Stephens (his father was William Thomas and mother was Grace Lower Stephens, his grandfather William Samuel, his great grandfather Joel and g-g-grandfater was William John, married to Barthena). I have been poking around and was tickled to find that there is a Stephens Ridge in Kentucky. Wow, what a tangled web!

I think your “scattered ” state of genealogy reflects all of us in one way or another . I have a file cabinet but there are paper boxes labeled surnames or projects on them with files that I move around all the time too wherever I work on my laptop. AND I hate scanning ! Just read your POWERPOINT FOR GENEALOGY article. You always have great ideas and I have been using your excel ideas for awhile now .

Hi Tim,
A good place to start would be the library to see what they have, might have old newspapers, and they can advise you where else that might be available, like a genealogy library, in the area, then the county clerk’s office and probate office if there was a will. There might also be a genealogy or historical society around. The library would know that. Good luck in your search.

Hi Carol. I am glad I found your site. I am looking for my Grandfather and his siblings in Russell County, Sherman Holt father John Holt and mom Nancy Jane Carol Born about 1883 I am getting nowhere and am considering a trip there. Where is a good place to start? Keep up the good work
