Andrew Stephens 1

Birth: 6 Aug 18371 2
Location: Mississippi3
Death: 23 Apr 19204 5
Location: Russell Co, Ky6
Buried: Bernard Cemetery, Russell Co, Ky7
Father: William Stephens8
Mother: Dorothy Wiggleton9
Military:
Spouse: Lucy J. Stephens10
Marriage: 5 Apr 185811
Location: Ripley Co, Mo12
Children: Nancy E, William Dudley, Mary Elizabeth, George Howard, Cornelius, Cortez, Andrew Jackson, Uriah, Dock Garfield, Armilda Jane
Occupation: farmer
Notes: This Andrew is “my” Andrew. I would like to know the parents of Lucy Stephens and how Andrew’s family is connected to the Ripley County Stephens line. I now believe that Lucy’s mother was Mary “Polly” Stephens – Andrew’s aunt. Sometime this summer, I’ll write a post about my reasoning on this. This family lived in Mississippi; Marion Co, Alabama; Franklin Co, Alabama; Ripley Co, Mo; Metcalfe Co, Ky and Russell Co, Ky. I cannot find the 1870 census. Finding their location in 1870 might help me find a helpful military record.

6 Based on the fact that he lived in Russell County for the majority of his life and was buried in Russell County.  No death certificate found yet.
7 Can you cite, “I was at the cemetery and saw the stone”? Also on Findagrave.com (submitted by me)
8 Andrew is listed with William Stephens in the 1850 census in Marion Co, Alabama. Andrew, Lucy and Nancy live with William Stephens in the 1860 census in Franklin Co, Alabama.
9 This name was given to me when I first began to do research.  It is repeated in every pedigree I’ve seen, but I have no sources to prove it.

Andrew Stephens 3

Birth: 8 Oct 1846
Location: Kentucky
Death: 27 Jan 1907
Location: Pulaski Co, Ky
Buried: Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Russell Co, Ky
Father:
Mother:
Military: Co “C” 13th Kentucky Cav
Pension #’s:
Spouse: Martha Jane Stephens
Marriage: 14 Sept. 1875
Location: Russell Co, Ky
Spouse 2: Victoria Coffey Smith
Marriage: 16 Feb 1890
Divorced: 18 Oct 1900
Location: Russell Co, Ky
Children: (with Martha) – Lucy A, Almarine, Mary Helen, Ferdinand, Lully
               (with Victoria) – Pearl
Occupation:
Notes: This is the Andrew who started my entire “puzzle”. I ordered a pension file thinking it might be for Andrew 1. It was not the correct man, but I discovered that he was married to the sister of Andrew 1 first and later was married then divorced from my great-great grandmother from another line. I would love to know his parents. My theory is that they are Andrew Stephens 4 and Elizabeth Perry, but I have not found proof for that yet. This Andrew’s military information was mixed with Andrew 5 giving him difficulties in his pension process.  Although Andrew 5 is from Pulaski County, I have included him in my list of Andrews because of this mix-up.

Andrew Stephens 4

Birth: 1795 or 1801
Location: Wilkes Co, NC
Death: 1882
Location: Russell Co, Ky
Buried:
Father: Welcome Stephens
Mother: Nancy Bailey
Military:
Spouse: Elizabeth Perry
Marriage: 24 May 1821
Location: Adair Co, Ky
Children: Martha (Pattie), Lucy, Welcome A, Obediah, Lydia (possibly Andrew J?)
Occupation:
Notes: This Andrew is the oldest of the 5 Andrews. If his parents are Welcome Stephens and Nancy Bailey, then he is the Uncle to Andrew 1.

Andrew Stephens 5

Birth: Sept. 1841
Location: Kentucky
Death: 27 June 1928
Location: Pulaski Co, Ky
Buried: Love Cemetery, Pulaski Co, Ky
Father: Ebenezer Stephens
Mother:
Military: Co. “G” 13th Ky Cav and
Co. “G” 19th Ky Inf
Pension #’s:
Spouse: Susan “Preshy/Presha” Smiley
Marriage: 16 Jan 1860
Location: Pulaski Co, Ky
Children: Mary Ellen, John Milton, Sarah, Rebecca, Dicy, Pleasant
Occupation:
Notes: I’m “patiently” waiting for this pension file to become available on Fold3 to see what information I might be able to find there. I know from Andrew 3’s pension file that THIS Andrew was given a 2 day furlough from the 13th Ky Cav and while he was home, his unit left without him. He later joined the 19th Ky Infantry, but was declared AWOL from the 13th Cav.  Because of the AWOL charge, Andrew 3 was denied his pension for some time. My motivation for researching this Andrew is to see if there is information for my line mixed in his records.

1 thought on “5 Andrew Stephens”

  1. This 5th Andrew is my direct line. His daughter, Dicy, was my grandmother on my dad
side.I have photos of A. J. and Presha Smiley. It has been years since I did genealogy but am interested in digging into it again. please feel free to contact me if you like…at pamndavid62@yahoo.com
