30 Minute Genealogy – Education

January 29, 2012 by TheShyGenealogist

I would love to do a little genealogy every day, but sometimes, that just feels overwhelming because of getting out all the materials I like to have available to me. So I’ve been brainstorming a list of things I could do if I only had 30 minutes available to me.  Here’s my list for genealogy EDUCATION:

  • Catch up in Twitter and click on messages with articles you’d like to read (but may not have time for) and copy the article to Evernote to read later.
  • Check out www.archives.gov/genealogy
  • Pick a census and read the instructions given to the enumerators and other pieces of information.  http://www.census.gov/history/pdf/measuringamerica.pdf. Look at your ancestor’s census record to see if you discover anything new.
  • Check out Legacy’s free webinars.  Anything to add to your calendar? Lots of archived webinars to choose from!  http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/webinars.asp  Another source for upcoming webinars can be found at http://blog.geneawebinars.com/p/calendar.html
  • Take a look at the “Fast Facts” on the census bureau web site to get a “feel for the times” for your ancestor. http://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/fast_facts/
  • http://www.census.gov/history/www/sights_sounds/photos/ – Many interesting photos to download, including maps
  • Watch a video on the Ancestry Channel on You Tube. Many of the “how to” videos are between 20-30 minutes.
